He is best known for his opera Carmen. The Mozart and Rossini expert has an active concert life in addition to her opera performances, and has some exciting house debuts this season. As Nadir, tenor Aaron Blake displayed a handsome voice and exceptional breath control. Damrau is wonderful, as always. The score also includes a beautiful soprano aria, “Comme autrefois,” and a love duet between Nadir and Leila. Her Act 2 aria (“Comme autrefois”) was mesmerizing, with sustained and beautiful quiet singing at the end.
"Au fond du temple saint" ("At the back of the holy temple") is a duet from Georges Bizet's 1863 opera Les pêcheurs de perles. His earlier work “Les Pêcheurs de Perles” (“The Pearl Fishers”) has languished in relative obscurity, except for the famous duet and a tenor aria. It is the Pearl Fishers number most successful at suggesting a Ceylonese sensibility. This aria is unique for managing to be unmistakably French in its delicacy and lack of Italianate shouting-from-the-housetops ardor, yet also convincingly exotic. The best versions of “Je crois entendre encore” (I still believe I hear), a beautiful aria from Georges Bizet‘s Les pêcheurs de perles. Her aria, “Comme autrefois,” was a highlight of the evening.
