22 hornet vs 223

Gebby, the little wildcat was light-years ahead of the .22 Hornet. The reasons that the .22 Hornet is still kicking while the .222 is fading are pretty simple. mainly I'm concerned about achieving good accuracy with cast boolits and have heard the Hornet can be … The louder the report the farther and longer the dogs go down. Using a .473” case head diameter—the same as the .30-06 Springfield and 7x57 Mauser—and a large rifle primer, the .22-250 wildcat offered velocities only slightly less than the larger, semi-rimmed .220 Swift.

BTW, I know .223 makes more economical sense, but I've always craved these calibers. and the like, the Hornet has an unmistakable advantage in terms of speed and energy. Easier to reload for due to case design. The Hornet has a loyal following and is nice to have, but if a person was to own just one 22 caliber centerfire, I would much rather have the.223, especially at ranges approaching 200 yards. The 222 wouldn't be bad either.

I also own a tactical Mini-14 in .223.

i would be shooting exclusively cast in the rifle. That's .22 HORNET! With 30-grain bullets, factory .22 WMR loads can top 2,200 fps, which is still about 900 fps slower than Federal's TNT .22 Hornet load with the same weight bullet. I think I have temporarily stepped back from the edge on my recent burning desire to buy a new varmint rifle in .223. While the 22 hornet won't be the hammer your 22-250 is it is certainly capable of killing coyotes out to 200 yards. I purchased a 22 Hornet to bridge the gap between the 17 HMR and the .223 for shooting prairie dogs. Re: 22 Hornet vs .223 Remington by Apollo » Wed Apr 02, 2014 9:35 pm As far as noise goes the Hornet is most definitely quieter than a .223R and not that much noisier than a .17HMR. The .223 is about 1100-1200 ft lbs, and the 22-250 about 1700. Similar to the 10mm vs .45 ACP debate, the .223 Remington has more energy remaining at 200 yards than many .22 Hornet loads have at the muzzle. The sister magnum rimfires are around $0.40/round, while basic 223 ammo is about the same cost and it can be reloaded for quite a bit less.
Re: 22 Hornet vs .223 Remington by dayzmagnumhunter » Thu Apr 03, 2014 7:36 am I don't like it because it is inaccurate more expansive the 223 and is a all round piece of s**t Greater power / killing range. I'll likely go CZ. I also own a tactical Mini-14 in .223. Simply the good old .22 Hornet necked down to hold .172” bullets, the .17 Hornet uses light-for-caliber bullets to achieve respectable velocities. Gebby, the little wildcat was light-years ahead of the .22 Hornet. Another option would be the 221 fireball as CZ chambers that as well in their 527. Traditionally credited to J.E.
