I have a large settlement going in my survival world and want to light up the area so that I don't have to deal with mobs but I hate having torches everywhere. So I decided to build a small civilization.

The idea is to establish the largest "safe-area" possible by building a wall around a very large area and then lighting the whole thing up. If possible, not something that will block up most of the floor. You could harvest glowstone from the nether or just light the area up with netherrack and flint and steel.

If I move over to the location it typically takes a couple of seconds for the 'light' to pop and brighten up the area. So yea, you can light up an entire base using a light that acts like it isn't even there! If your base is in an area where snow is appropriate, you can place a torch, jack-o-lantern, or glowstone/sea lantern block a few blocks deep, with a couple glass blocks or your preferred transparent block, and then put snow on top flush with the ground.

I also have glowstone on the walls at 10x intervals at the 7 and 17 mark up the 20x wall.

I have always wondered if there is a nice looking way to light up large areas (large house, area of land in superflat) without just plopping down thousands of torches on the ground or walls. Etc.
